Tarmac Calculator Guide for UK Projects
What is Tarmac?
Tarmac (short for tarmacadam) is the common British term for bituminous road surfaces. Originally, tarmac used coal tar as a binder, but modern "tarmac" is actually asphalt - using bitumen derived from petroleum instead of tar.
In the UK, "tarmac" and "asphalt" are used interchangeably for driveways, car parks, and road surfaces. Our tarmac tonnage calculator helps you estimate material quantities for any bituminous paving project.
Tarmac Tonnage Formula
Tonnes = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (m) × Density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000
Example: A typical UK driveway 8m long × 3m wide × 50mm thick:
8 × 3 × 0.05 × 2400 ÷ 1000 = 2.88 tonnes
Recommended Tarmac Thickness (UK)
Always lay over a minimum 100-150mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base for proper drainage and stability.
