Understanding Bitumen in Asphalt Paving

What is Bitumen?

Bitumen (also called asphalt binder or asphalt cement) is a black, highly viscous petroleum product used as the binding agent in asphalt concrete. It's the "glue" that holds aggregates together in road surfaces, driveways, and parking lots.

Our bitumen calculator helps you determine the exact quantity of bitumen binder needed based on your project's area, thickness, mix density, and specified bitumen content percentage.

Bitumen Calculation Formula

Bitumen (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (m) × Mix Density (kg/m³) × Bitumen %

Example: For a 200 m² driveway with 50mm (0.05m) thickness, using a mix with 2,400 kg/m³ density and 5% bitumen content: 200 × 0.05 × 2400 × 0.05 = 1,200 kg bitumen.

Typical Bitumen Content by Mix Type

Dense-Graded HMA (Surface) 5.0 - 6.5%
Dense-Graded HMA (Base) 4.0 - 5.5%
Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) 5.5 - 7.0%
Open-Graded Friction Course 5.5 - 6.5%
